What is the difference between the 1040 and 1040a federal tax return?

The 1040a is the short form. If you are itemizing, you cannot use 1040a and have to use 1040.

Length and detail. The 1040 is the standard form, the 1040A a shortened version. Those with little activity can use the 1040A (such as no itemized deductions.)
